He told the Daily Telegraph: “As I leave today, I hope that people will see a stronger country”.

Outgoing British Prime Minister David Cameron spends his last evening at 10 Downing Street Tuesday night while Home Secretary Theresa May prepares to move in.

Having served as home secretary since 2010, May said she was “honored and humbled” to become the new prime minister.

Mr Cameron told the Telegraph: “I came into Downing Street to confront our problems as a country and lead people through hard decisions so that together we could reach better times“.

Mrs May will then have an audience with the Queen, when she accepts the monarch’s offer to form a new government and will, in keeping with tradition, “kiss hands” with the head of state. She will be the second woman to hold the role after Margaret Thatcher, who governed between 1979 and 1990.

A removal van was seen outside the prime minister’s apartment on Downing Street to take away Cameron’s possessions ahead of May’s arrival.

The contest began when Mr Cameron, who has been prime minister since 2010, announced he would step down after losing the European Union referendum in June.

The cabinet meeting at 10, Downing Street was “quite emotional”, according to ministers, with “wonderful tributes” paid to Cameron, led by prime minister-in-waiting May and chancellor George Osborne.

Cameron said it was an “honor and a pleasure” to chair the Cabinet for the past six years, adding that he wishes May “the support and friendship he had received and that she would be the right person to lead the country through the hard times ahead”.

The swift transition of power comes after the expected nine-week leadership campaign was truncated to just a couple of days by leading Brexit campaigner Andrea Leadsom’s surprise withdrawal. Cameron led the campaign to remain with the 28-nation EU.
