After closed-door discussions lasting nearly six hours, the 33 members of Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) made a decision to include him automatically on the ballot.
The Welsh politician has gathered enough support from Labour MPs to join Angela Eagle in challenging Jeremy Corbyn.
Launching her bid to topple Mr Corbyn yesterday, Ms Eagle argued the embattled leader was unable to “provide the leadership” to win a general election.
But there is good news for anti-Corbyn MPs.
Following the European Union referendum, 172 Labour MPs indicated they had no confidence in their leader, and only 40 MPs gave Mr Corbyn their backing.
The ability to vote so cheaply in the previous election was regarded as part of the reason why Corbyn won, with backers of more left wing parties able to influence the outcome.
Members must also have been in the party for at least six months, disqualifying the tens of thousands who have joined in recent days. He previously said in an interview the Labour party would be “wiped out” because of him.
A leading trade union has warned Labour against a “sordid fix” to remove Jeremy Corbyn from a future leadership ballot.
After hearing Corbyn would be on the ballot. “I am glad Angela Eagle is stepping up to take take leadership when we have such a vacuum of it at Westminster”.
He told them he was “delighted” by what happened and supporters began chanting “Jeremy!”
He said some of these protests were encouraged by Jeremy Corbyn and those around him.
But Mr Corbyn’s supporters argue that, as incumbent leader, he should not be classed as a “challenger”, and the NEC is facing the threat of legal action if his name is not on the ballot paper.
Shadow justice minister Richard Burgon’s attempt to take to social media to support his leader and ally Jeremy Corbyn in a time of turmoil hasn’t exactly turned out as planned. But Adrian said, “We should have a say-the Labour Party was set up by the unions in the first place”.
Former shadow business secretary Angela Eagle has already launched her challenge to Mr Corbyn, while former shadow work and pensions secretary Owen Smith is expected to do the same.
Presenter John Humphrys said that while people would accept leaders get emotional, he questioned whether it was wise to show tears when they are likely to come up against formidable worldwide opponents such as Vladimir Putin.
