Rosberg was given a ten second drop for being given too much help over the radio, dropping him to third place and promoting Verstappen up to second.
However the Stewards saw things differently and Mercedes have now lodged an appeal against the decision to hand Rosberg a time penalty.
Lewis Hamilton celebrates with team-mates after winning the British Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone. The loss of one position closes his lead in the standings over teammate Lewis Hamilton to just one point.
Briton Hamilton won the race, his fourth home victory and third in a row.
Lewis Hamilton bested Nico Rosberg, and Daniel Ricciardo was again hampered by bad luck as Max Verstappen had the day’s standout drive.
It was not a good move for the Perth driver, who was soon after delayed by a virtual safety auto after Pascal Wehrlein’s Manor slid off the circuit and became bogged.
In fact, on lap 15, he was caught by wunderkid Max Verstappen who passed him on the outside at Becketts on the following lap, and kept second even after the following stop for slicks.
Mercedes-Benz plans to appeal against this decision and penalty.
“I had quite an oversteering auto in the beginning, and I knew I was quicker in the second and third sectors, so there was plenty of pace in that first sector if I needed it”.
He received instructions from his team on how to work through the problem, but teams giving advise over the radio is against F1 rules.
Nico Rosburg’s championship lead over Hamilton is down to one point.
“I’m not anxious, the team have studied those rules so they understand what they can and can’t say”.
“However, the advice to avoid seventh gear was considered to breach TD/06-16, and therefore article 27.1 of the sporting regulations”.
