Olympic track trials: Felix won’t defend 200-meter gold
Allyson Felix’s plans to double up over 200/400 metres at next month’s Rio Olympics, already accommodated by an adjustment in the athletics programme scheduling, came to naught on the final day of the US Olympic Track and Field trials as she missed the chance to defend her 200m title in Brazil by one place and one hundredth of a second.

Hailey qualified for the Olympic trials but had to pull out due to injury (foot) as did 2012 Wildcat Olympian Georganne Moline (back).
Ostrander broke the Mountain West record in the event by crossing the line in 15 minutes, 24.74 seconds. Running isn’t her life. The former University of OR standout will have about 100 friends and family in attendance to watch her race. “At 16 years old, I wasn’t doing anything”. “To have her just lead this team, we’ve been there, and for us to be back on this road together is just wonderful and kind of different because we were on the same team and now we’re on the same team again”.
“I gave it all I had but it just wasn’t there today”, said Felix, who two months ago could not even walk because of a sprained ankle. “Just realizing sometimes you have to lose in order to get better, it’s a big thing for me”. She breezed in the 400.
April Steiner Bennett, Arkansas’ first All-American female vaulter in 2001 who finished eighth at the 2008 Olympics, cleared 14-9 Sunday on her second attempt, then missed three attempts at 15-1.
Decathlon world record holder Ashton Eaton, triple jumper Christian Taylor, pole vaulter Jenn Suhr and long jumper Brittney Reese all will be back for a shot at a second gold with Allyson Felix, the London 200 metres champion, going for gold in the 400.
McLaughlin, who still has another year at Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, N.J., finished in 54.15, which sets a world junior record, improving on the 54.46 she ran at the New Balance Nationals in June to break the 32-year-old record set by Leslie Maxie of Mills (Millbrae, Calif.) in 1984.
“It was a great experience”.
“I’m dreaming right now”. “I feel like it is, it can get intense”. “This is the next level for me”.
According to The Hattiesburg American, Bowie is the fourth former Southern Miss track and field star to qualify for the Olympics.
“I think I’ve gotten a lot more confident in the past years”, she said. Sandi Morris, 24, and Lexi Weeks, 19, are also factors in final.
Raisman and Douglas are the first female US gymnasts during Karolyi’s tenure to make their Olympic debuts and be selected to return four years later for another run.
The Americans will arrive in Brazil with an athletics squad likely to include 77 first-time Olympians.
WIDE OPEN: The women’s 400-meter hurdles is wide open after favorite Shamier Little failed to make it out of the semifinals.
Raisman was the oldest on the Usa team when she won the floor at the London Olympics and captained the close-knit “Fierce Five” group that captured the team title.
HALFWAY HOME: Barbara Nwaba has a slim 11-point lead over Kendell Williams in the heptathlon with three events remaining.
