Theresa May will take over as British PM today
Mr Cameron told The Daily Telegraph it had been “a privilege to serve the country I love”.

Mr Cameron announced he was stepping down last month after he unsuccessfully campaigned in the referendum for the United Kingdom to remain in the European Union.
In the interim period, the United Kingdom will not have a Prime Minister at all.
Mrs May, now the Home Secretary, will then be sworn in by the Queen and will go to No 10 to make her first statement as Prime Minister.
After her own visit to the palace to be formally entrusted with the job by the monarch, May will then enter Number 10 Downing Street as prime minister in the afternoon.
Theresa May will officially become Britain’s second female Prime Minister today.
“I came into Downing Street to confront our problems as a country and lead people through hard decisions so that together we could reach better times”, Cameron told The Telegraph.
“As I leave, I hope people will see a stronger country, a thriving economy, and more chances to get on in life”.
May’s bid for his job accelerated as key proponents of Britain’s European Union withdrawal, including charismatic former mayor of London Boris Johnson, stepped back in a head-spinning round of political bloodletting.
Mr Osborne looks unlikely to stay on as Chancellor after the PM-to-be trashed parts of his economic legacy in a campaign speech on Monday, with Philip Hammond, who has long coveted the role at the Treasury, among those who could take over.
The contest had been due to last until September but ended unexpectedly on Monday when junior energy minister Andrea Leadsom, Ms May’s last rival candidate after others were eliminated, abruptly pulled out.
Only the second woman to lead the nation, she’s the most prominent of a group of women now centre-stage in United Kingdom leadership roles.
The leading Leave campaigner said it was right that the minister given responsibility for heading Brexit negotiations should be “somebody who was at the heart of the Leave campaign”.
She is also liked in and around Maidenhead, the well-to-do commuter town west of London that she has represented in parliament since 1997. “I’ve been clear that we need to take this process carefully”.
European leaders have asked the government to move quickly to formalise its divorce from the EU but May has indicated she will not be rushed into triggering the formal procedure for Brexit.
