Best is yet to come, says Murray

Murray came into the tournament after losing to Novak Djokovic in the finals of both the Australian Open and French Open this year.

Murray had been beaten in the first two major finals of the season but produced a near flawless display to see off sixth seed Milos Raonic 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 and claim his second All England Club title.

Andy Murray lived up to the sky-high expectations when beating Canadian Milos Raonic in the Wimbledon final on Sunday, telling CNBC the day after that he felt “really good, a little exhausted but very, very happy”.

Andy Murray can build on his second Wimbledon success and win more majors with coach Ivan Lendl by his side, says former Davis Cup player Jamie Baker.

“There was no dancing for me and Serena Williams at the ball – I think the tradition had finished until Novak Djokovic wanted to do it previous year”, he told BBC Sport. If I were to put a number on it, I’d set it high and I’d rather fail by setting the bar high.

The 29-year-old celebrated his triumph at the Champions Dinner and then partied into the early hours with wife Kim and friends at a West End nightclub, living up to his promise to enjoy this title more than his first one in 2013.

The Scot has closed the gap to Djokovic at the top of the world rankings, although it still remains a wide gulf, and can lay claim to having been the most consistent player in 2016 after reaching all three slam finals.

“He was telling everyone it was allergies, that he had hayfever”, Murray told a press conference. “I believe I am, but I’ll know more tomorrow when I wake up”.

The new Wimbledon champion said he is nearly certain to skip this week’s Davis Cup quarter final tie in Belgrade – although he might fly to Serbia just to lend his support. “I’m going to try to get myself back in this position, try to be better in this position”. Obviously it will be quite different to the Olympics when it was held here but I’ve loved being involved in the two Olympics that I’ve been at.

Murray said although he had been playing against the three best players of all time, he is aiming to find ways to establish himself as the sport’s preeminent force.

Murray was due to speak to Britain’s captain, Leon Smith, to confirm his decision later on Monday, having discussed the issue briefly at the Wimbledon Champions’ Ball on Sunday night. “I played some really good stuff today”, Murray was quoted as saying. “I feel, yeah, more content this time”.

“This is the most important tournament for me every year”, Murray said after his victory. “I’ll give it my best shot to do that”.

“A lot of people have said when Roger had kids, he started playing some of his best tennis”.

To do it at Wimbledon, the game’s holy grail?
