Once again, Massachusetts residents will be able to benefit from the state’s tax free holiday weekend, just in time for back to school.
Shearman said families spend an average of $630 during a sale tax holiday event and will likely save $30 or more by not having to pay sales taxes, enough to pay for another school outfit.
Dawn Pollay admits she forgot about the sales tax free holiday. “Getting four boys school supplies can be a little expensive”, she said. There will be a bus parked at Tanglewood Mall to collect supplies.
Asked whether retailers would like to see the holiday passed earlier in future years, Harold Tubman, owner of Circle Furniture, said it is tradeoff between killing sales beforehand as shoppers wait to make their purchases and giving stores time to prepare.
“There’s a psychological impact that goes far beyond the savings”, Shearman said.
ABC7 got a supply list for a fourth-grade student at Oasis Charter Elementary School to find out typically how much school supplies would cost.
One mother says she’s spent an arm and a leg already and there’s still more spending to be done. Monitors, speakers, printers, and keyboards priced $500 or less are also exempt from New Mexico’s sales tax during the holiday event. Businesses that are open Friday and Saturday are required to participate. Qualifying items may be purchased in brick-and-mortar stores, online, or by telephone or mail.
Economics Center at the University of Cincinnati estimated Ohio’s retail sales volume would increase by about 4.8 percent during the month of August if a sales tax holiday was in place.
