COMMENT By Kris Voakes Not since the period between 1988 and 1991 have Manchester United had to watch three successive title races take place without them. Madrid have already had one previous offer rejected by Manchester United according to the Daily Star, but as reported through the Express, L’Equipe believe that United are preparing for a second bid. David Moyes inherited a Premier League winning team under Ferguson and couldn’t even lead it into Europe with the support of multiple high-profile signings. Then again, that’s the player that Di Maria was planned to be upon arrival at United last summer.

John Cross in the Mirror used the same reasoning to suggest that United boss Louis van Gaal may be tempted to pursue Pepe now that the Ramos signing is out of the question. Darmian, Memphis and Schneiderlin all started, with the Frenchman even scoring what proved to be the only goal of the game after just five minutes.

Yet with motivation and tactics Ferguson managed to compete with the best in the world with only a few world-class players in his squad.

Although United have signed Sergio Romero on a free transfer, Van Gaal wants a top quality keeper if he loses De Gea.

Late moves in the market before September 2 could plug the holes, but this is now, to all intents and purposes, a United squad of Van Gaal’s design.

Van Gaal hasn’t quite been able to complete the set though. However, despite the many millions that have been spent, the greatest of question marks remains over United’s defence.

Sergio Ramos has reportedly rejected an offer from Real Madrid
