The day started with a sit-down, with Governor Mike Pence at the Indiana Governor’s Mansion. His family met on Tuesday with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who speaks to Trump on a near-daily basis.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump gives a thumbs-up as he leaves the residence of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence in Indianapolis, Wednesday, July 13, 2016.
“Ms. Pence and I put out a breakfast spread late last night”, said Pence, “Went out and clipped some flowers, served coffee and warm breakfast this morning, just had good conversation as a family”. Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee for president, is expected to announce his choice for VP on Friday. But not Trump, whose search has been remarkably public over the past week.
Speculation that Newt Gingrich could be Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick has prompted Fox News to suspend its contract with the former Republican Speaker of the House. He added that Trump is cognizant that he needs to make a decision by Friday given gubernatorial succession rules in Indiana.
“They’re utilizing their corporate experience as a joint team to vet what would be another executive they’re about to hire”, Bonjean said. He says, “I’m narrowing it down. I mean, I’m at three, potentially four”, he told Bret Baier. “But in my own mind, I probably am thinking about two”, he said. Jeff Sessions, who traveled to IN to counsel Trump.
Downtown Indy transformed Wednesday into the campaign headquarters for Donald Trump. “Fast but very productive”.
Chris Christie, the first of Trump’s defeated primary challengers to endorse the presumptive GOP nominee, is also in the running.
“It’s a little bit like ‘The Apprentice, ‘” Newt Gingrich said in a Tuesday interview with Fox News Channel. Trump told CNN that “we’ll have a visit I think”.
Mr Trump said on Twitter that he would reveal his choice at 11am on Friday in Manhattan. “Governor Pence is charismatically challenged”.
Christie, 53, a tough-talking politician described as a political bruiser, already campaigned with Trump in Virginia on Monday.
“Newt has been my friend for a long time”. I’m not looking for an attack dog.
He notes the discussion becomes moot if Trump doesn’t select Pence.
Pence is a steady, staunch conservative who would help calm nervous Republican wary of Trump’s impulsive style.
“Everyone here is acting as if it is happening and Pence is the pick”, Indiana Republican strategist Pete Seat told FoxNews.com last weekend. The Trumps and Pences dined at The Capital Grille, staying past midnight.
Trump and Christie, meanwhile, are scheduled to speak by phone Wednesday, two sources told CNN.
Pence was pressed Wednesday, as he has been recently, on whether he agrees with the specifics of Trump’s plan – building the wall on the Mexican border, for example. Asked if he is open to being her running mate, Sanders said, “I doubt that will happen”.
On Wednesday afternoon, Pence said he was “humbled to be a part” of the process. “I think other people that he engages either as advisers or surrogates between now and November will send an important signal to the American people as to how he’ll govern”.
Republicans in Cleveland said they were impressed with this show, and newly excited by the prospect of a successful convention because Trump shows he seems to be finding the sweet spot between teleprompters and loose rants.
Tuesday, Pence essentially auditioned to be Trump’s running mate, joining Trump at an Indy fund-raiser, and at a campaign rally in nearby Westfield.

At the rally, Pence slammed Clinton, saying that “to paraphrase the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, I think it would be “extremely careless” to elect Hillary Clinton as president”.
