Court documents say 28-year-old Jimmy Andrew Suggs of Vinemont, Alabama, told investigators that he and Zack Ryan Kuykendall didn’t put dirt on their campfire to extinguish it, just rocks.

They face felony arson charges because lives were endangered as a result of the fire.

Suggs and another man from Alabama have been arrested in connection with a wildfire that has destroyed three homes and three buildings north of Nederland in Boulder County.

A separate fire burning since last month through remote forests farther north has grown to almost 19,000 acres, creeping across the state line into Wyoming, said Lynn Barclay, a spokeswoman for the fire management team of that blaze.

Cooler temperatures will make firefighting a little more comfortable for crews battling the Cold Spring fire, but humidity is still low and winds are predicted to be erratic.

The Spring Gulch Fire burned 11 acres in the Pike National Forest, three miles south of Deckers, in Douglas County, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Boulder Canyon will continue to be closed west of Summer Road as fire conditions continue.

Investigators said Monday they were able to track down the pair after acting on tips that they were seen running from the area where the fire broke out.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office says there are 30 more homes in the path of the fire.

Authorities determined the origin of the fire was at a campsite near the Peak-to-Peak Highway and Cold Springs Road. According to the Incident Information System officials note that, “predictions of fire growth indicate the potential for significant structure and infrastructure loss”. They say a campfire probably started the fire.

Investigators determined the origin of the fire was an ad hoc campsite near the Peak-to Peak Highway and Cold Springs Road. Above the fire continues to burn on Sunday
