Yankees’ Severino makes promising debut
In all, what the Yankees saw Tuesday night was their prized prospect-No.

Throw it soft and slow. John Farrell said as much yesterday, and did so while talking about the pitching matchups, which is completely insane because it suggests that the Red Sox were prioritizing their ability to win a meaningless game in a lost season over player development.
“I thought he threw the ball extremely well”, said Yankees third baseman Chase Headley, whose throwing error eventually led to Boston’s first run. More importantly, Severino struck out seven without walking a batter.
“That young kid, he’s got good stuff, man”, Ortiz said. “I think at the beginning of the game he was kind of missing location a bit, but other than that, he was very explosive”. The Boston closer finished off his 24th save in 26 opportunities by retiring pinch hitter Brian McCann on a fly ball to center field.
The 21-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic made only one real mistake, putting a 2-0 fastball right in David Ortiz’s happy zone in the fourth inning.
“We don’t leave New York without David probably going deep one time”.
But there weren’t that many lovely swings.
Wright has been working to improve his game by working with Red Sox legend, and knuckleballer extraordinaire, Tim Wakefield. Carlos Beltran hit a home run, J.R. Murphy had two hits, and Mark Teixeira had a hit as the Yankees scored one run on five hits.
For additional team television and radio station affiliates: New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. “Same baseball. I was just trying to get people out”. McCann, who flied out to center, did not start because of a stiff left knee.
Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia did not get a decision but turned in a respectable outing, allowing a run and three hits in six innings.
Despite a clean fifth inning, the Yankee starter’s debut ended after five.
The Yankees have totaled 90 runs in the last 10 games.
Red Sox: Rookie RHP Steven Wright (4-4, 4.53) set career highs in his last start, pitching seven innings and striking out eight to beat the White Sox. He’s got a good fastball, cutter, a changeup.
In the minors this year, Severino was 9-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings, including a 7-0 record and 1.91 ERA at Triple-A, with 50 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings.
“He’s helped me out a lot since spring training”, Wright said of Wakefield following the game. I think he might have gotten a little stronger as the night went along.
New York is batting.
Even if the Yankee offense hasn’t been as productive as usual over the last two games, Thursday’s victory is a fine jumping off point for what could be an epic series this weekend. The Yankees are scheduled to face Dickey on Friday night.
In Atlanta, Norichika Aoki hit his third home run of the year to lead off the ninth inning for the San Francisco Giants in an 8-3 rout of the Atlanta Braves. “There is no target date for the return of OF Mookie Betts (concussion)”, Farrell said…. Cherington said top prospect Brian Johnson, a first-round draft pick in 2012, has inflammation around his pitching elbow but there is “no evidence that there is anything going on around the ligament”. “The extra days gave him a chance to build himself back up, so no, we didn’t”. No one except Ortiz seemed comfortable at the plate and few were able to square up, especially at the upper regions of Severino’s velocity readings. “I definitely think it’s a positive for him and what he could mean for us moving forward”.
Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo noted Jones had already grown a beard in his brief time away from the team and was shaving it to comply with club rules once again.
