Theresa May Becomes British Prime Minister

I do!’ After Cameron formally resigns, the 59-year-old May will later visit the palace, where the queen will ask her to form a new government.

One of her first tasks will be to appoint a new cabinet.

“That will be the mission of the government I lead and together we will build a better Britain”. However, she has admitted to a political evolution on LGBT rights and has said that she would vote differently on these issues if they were at question today.

“Following the referendum [to leave the EU], we face a great national challenge”.

“I was the future once”, Cameron quipped as he left office.

The Daily Telegraph said in an editorial that Cameron “leaves behind a stronger country, a thriving economy and more chances to get on in life”. I believe Theresa will provide a strong and stable leadership in fullfilling the conservative manifesto of which we were elected.

Britain’s new prime minister Theresa May has vowed to lead a “one nation” government that works for all not just the “privileged few”.

In David Cameron (the outgoing prime minister) I follow in the footsteps of a great modern Prime Minister.

Britain’s transition of power unfolded with startling speed since the June 23 referendum on European Union membership. “We will do everything we can to help anybody, whatever your background, to go as far as your talents will take you”, May said, in language more often used by left-of-center politicians, rather than by members of the center-right Conservative Party.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve our country as prime minister over these last six years”, he said.

At some point during the final meeting Mr Cameron’s family was introduced to the Queen, who earlier in the day toured the new air ambulance base at Cambridge airport where her grandson the Duke of Cambridge works.

May emphasized her commitment to delivering Brexit but “explained that we would need some time to prepare for these negotiations and spoke of her hope that these could be conducted in a constructive and positive spirit”, the spokeswoman said of the calls.

“The queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Boris Johnson MP as Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs”, Downing Street said in a statement.

She is the first female PM since Margaret Thatcher stood down in 1990.

May faces a daunting job as prime minister, facing pressure from the European Union to start Brexit negotiations, salvage a plummeting economy and unite a divided nation.

The former home secretary looked directly into the waiting television cameras, and said she would make decisions based on the interests of struggling families, not the rich.

At the age of 49, David Cameron is the youngest Prime Minister to leave office since 1895.

European Union leaders have said they expect May to move quickly, and French President François Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi announced they will hold a summit in August on the vote.
