A U.S. drone attack on a militant compound in North Waziristan on Thursday killed at least five militants, security officials said. It has been a hub for Al Qaeda and Taliban militants since the early 2000s. Another security official in Peshawar confirmed the attack and casualties.
Washington has long used drone strikes to kill militants.
US President Barack Obama has repeatedly defended the use of the controversial drones as “self-defense”.
The attack on the Haqqani network headquarters came a week after Afghan Taliban sources told media that the chief of the Haqqani network Jalaluddin Haqqani died of illness a year ago.
Alston also said he feared that the drone killings by the US Central Intelligence Agency could develop a “playstation” mentality.
