The petition was created on July 6 – the same day that Castile was shot and killed during a auto stop in suburban St. Paul – by a user only identified as Y.S. and quickly gained momentum following the next-day slaying of five Dallas police officers during a Black Lives Matter protest. “What have you not heard me say?” Giuliani has repeatedly called the activist group “inherently racist” because it “divides us”.

The group’s founders insist Black Lives Matter is not encouraging violence. “They want a more safe, more equal society”.

In a statement Edwards released after the meeting, the governor said the state’s law enforcement and civilians should come together in order to emerge from “this tragedy” stronger.
It’s unclear at this point when or if the Dallas Police Department might publicly clear Hughes’ name. And several Black Lives Matteractivists were quick to condemn the slayings in Dallas. “This is where we’re stuck…. And some of the voices that are out there are saying one thing, trying to pull us apart, splitting hairs and taking various unifying messages and ripping them to shreds beneath the minutiae of just pretentious ignorance”.
