The attack, which left five officers dead, making it the deadliest assault on USA law enforcement since 9/11, marked a new kind of danger for police and caused many departments to begin rethinking their safety strategies.

Over the longer term, police across the country will likely increase surveillance and expand their security presence at major events, Mr. Manger predicted.

Protests have broken out nationwide following the deaths of 32-year-old Castile and 37-year-old Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said that it’s within people’s rights to protest, but that protests can “put our police officers in harm’s way”.

It was enough, Brown said, to have “devastating effects on our city”.

Former President George W. Bush also will speak at the service.

“In the last couple of years, we’ve seen this violence become an ever-present reality in our lives”, Lenz said.

Mr. Obama had arrived in Europe late last week, hoping to provide some stability for European leaders grappling with Britain’s exit from the European Union, Russia’s military aggression and a flood of refugees from the Middle East.

In a statement, Governor Mark Dayton commended the “heroic efforts” to resolve the situation peacefully by law enforcement, and was critical of the methods used by protestors.

Demonstrators blocked the freeway, and threw bottles, bricks and fireworks at police, authorities said.

In Minnesota, Pastor Eric Elikin addressed the mostly white members of the Easter Lutheran Church in Eagan, a city about 15 miles from St. Paul.

Clark said his staff is reviewing evidence, including police reports, photos and video to determine what charges against the 50 arrested protesters are warranted.

“As a result, today we are seeing one of the noblest professions condemned by those who could benefit the most”, Mr. Williams said. He said the federal government has deepened its cooperation with police under Mr. Obama through grants for equipment and other programs. They were cited for public nuisance and unlawful assembly and released. It was later found that, while in possession of a firearm, Sterling had not touched it during the encounter and had been shot to death while effectively being bound by two officers.

Barb Carmouche, 62, of South St. Paul attended because prayer is “all I can do right now”, she said. He also held a bent metal officers’ badge in his hand, illustrating the force of what police absorbed from the demonstrators. Thousands of people showed up to rallies across the U.S.

“There is sorrow, there is anger, there is confusion about next steps”, Mr. Obama said. “We’re being hunted”, said Castile’s mother. “We don’t want to be the spark to the flames”. “And that serves as the basis for us being able to move forward in a constructive and positive way”.

Black Lives Matter is asking its supporters to join together at 6 p.m. ET at Make Shift Boston, “to mourn our lost, organize our people, and celebrate our resistance”.

Police protests were calm and lightly attended in Denver on Monday, when a group of about 50 waved signs decrying police killings while a smaller group entered a fourth day of quietly mourning blacks killed by police in the past year. The perception of the scary black man still exists.

Riot police in full gear stopped protesters in Baton Rouge from walking onto an interstate on Sunday evening, police said, thwarting a protest tactic that social justice activists have increasingly tried in several US cities.

Marchers also took to the streets Saturday night in Miami, with police saying Interstate 395 was shut down for a brief period. He says the process is sometimes messy and controversial, but the ability to engage in free speech has improved America. Why would someone tell a police officer he had a gun if he meant to use it?
