Clouds cover the sky as storms pass through the area north of Luxemburg, Minn., on Monday, July 11, 2016.
The powerful tornado, with wind speeds of up to 125 miles per hour, tore part of the roof off the Hilltop Health Care Center, forcing about 50 people to scramble for safety.
The sheriff’s department said Mitchell R. Koski, 56, of Montreal, Wisconsin, had died, but didn’t specify how the man died or where he was found. Sheriff Tony Furyk and Coroner Diane Simonich didn’t immediately return voicemail and email messages.
The severe weather brought heavy rains, and parts of central Minnesota were under a flash flood warning on Tuesday morning.
The storms also damaged or destroyed 85 boats at Saxon Harbor in Iron County, state emergency officials said.
Meeker County Sheriff Brian Cruze is releasing more information on the damage done by tornadoes yesterday (Monday) afternoon.
The weather service said the first tornado hit Litchfield about 5 p.m. Monday.
Wisconsin Emergency Management issued a news release Tuesday saying 33 people were trapped on Michigan Island, part of the Apostle Island chain near Bayfield, Wisconsin.
“Well the garage is gone, the shed is gone the snowmobile trailer is gone, we’ve got a snow plow in the tree”.
At each stop, Dayton took time to talk to city leaders and those affected by the storms to assess what ways that the state could help.
A utility says almost 185,000 of its Missouri and IL customers are without electricity because of fast-moving thunderstorms that meteorologists believe may have packed wind gusts at times exceeding 70 miles per hour.
The same storm moved toward Aitkin and dumped more than six inches of rain there and in the Milaca and Moose Lake areas.
The National Weather Service is forecasting another round of thunderstorms Wednesday for northern Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The governor says Litchfield could be eligible for emergency assistance from a special state fund. “Lived in this town 52 years and I’ve never seen a storm like this in our community”. Firefighters helped the motorists out of their vehicles and blocked the roadway to prevent traffic until the water receded.
