Delhi On Alert After Yakub Memon’s Hanging

Many protested against his execution in the days leading up to his death. They rejected the plea shortly before 5:00 am. That did not happen.

At a quarter to 2 a.m., the CJI decided to let the Bench headed by Justice Misra to hear the matter.

Making a statement in the House on the hanging of Yakub, Fadnavis said the execution was done after completing all judicial procedures and the convict had exhausted all legal and constitutional remedies.

Memon’s lawyer Annad Grover termed the court’s decision “a tragic mistake”. “I hope he had a dignified death”, he added while the gallows were being prepped for Memon.

Nagpur jail sources informed that Yakub said, “I want to meet my daughter”.

AM: According to TV reports Yakub Memon has been hanged. He offered Namaz ( prayer) and read the Holy Quran before his scheduled hanging.

Mumbai has been converted into a fortress as Memon’s body was being taken to the city from Nagpur jail, where he was executed.

AM: Yakub Memon was declared dead at 7.01 AM by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) who was present when the 1993 Mumbai serial blast convict was hanged.

Memon, a chartered accountant, had left the country along with his wife just before the blasts.

The 1993 bombings in Mumbai were reportedly carried out to avenge the destruction months earlier of a 16th century mosque in Ayodhya, in northern India, by Hindu extremists.

Yakub was also charged with providing tickets to co-accused who were sent to Pakistan via Dubai for training in arms and ammunition.

Quick Response Teams of police, formed after the 26/11 terrorist attacks, have been deployed at a few places, including the Al Hussaini building, where the Memon family lives.

The execution drew wide public support but has stirred controversy about whether the punishment adequately reflected the help Memon gave authorities in solving the crime.
