A lawyer for the Minnesota police officer who shot and killed Philando Castile said Castile’s gun, not his race, was the main factor.

The killing of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge on Tuesday and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minn., on Wednesday understandably renewed national outrage over excessive force by police against black men.

The St. Anthony Police Department, which employs the officer who shot Castile, did not participate in the study.

The St. Paul Police Department tweeted that arrests have been made during the protest but didn’t indicate how many. Castile, of St. Paul, was the driver of the vehicle involved in the stop.
