Residents in the area were warned to stay indoors and to charge cell phone batteries and gather supplies, which is standard protocol whenever severe weather warnings are issued.

A thunderstorm in the Baton Rouge area, accompanied by pea-size hail and winds in excess of 30 miles per hour, will remain active through 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to a special weather statement from the Slidell office of the National Weather Service. A number of storms had formed west of the region as of 1:15 p.m., and were headed northeast.
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
Meanwhile, a narrow strip of northwest and north-central Nebraska remains under an elevated risk for wildfires today and Thursday due to hot, dry and windy conditions in the area.
