Actually, there’s not that much to gripe about this year. The nominations, after all, went pretty much as expected.
Tatiana Maslany got a repeat nomination for Orphan Black. Here’s what happened in the top categories. Hulu, still looking for its first Emmy, is pinning its comedy hopes on the freshman season of “Casual”. Nor did anyone else from the show, even though it did earn one token nod for Best Casting.
On the drama side, history-making Viola Davis, who previous year became the first minority to win a best drama series Emmy, for “How to Get Away with Murder”, should get the opportunity to double down on her achievement.
Rami Malek, the star of Mr. Robot, is also a new nominee. Jesse Plemons got a supporting nomination for “Fargo”. It also didn’t score any in the acting categories. Most shows nominated for best comedy also have strong showings in the performance categories.
Game of Thrones received 23 nominations, the most of any show. The Lord of Light brought Jon Snow back for a reason.
“I’m bummed the medium sized dragon in Game of Thrones got snubbed in Best Supporting, but happy to see Master of None and our entire team get acknowledged”.
This year, streaming networks made up exactly half of the entrants for Outstanding Comedy Series, with Netflix’s Master of None getting a nomination for its debut season, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Transparent remaining in the running after their second seasons.
Amusing woman Amy Schumer got a nomination for “Outstanding Comedy Actress” in her Comedy Central series, Inside Amy Schumer. While UnReal didn’t get a drama series recognition, Constance Zimmer did crack the supporting actress category, and the show was also recognized with a writing nomination. They, along with Black-ish, a nominee for comedy series and its actor Anthony Anderson and actress Tracy Ellis Ross, were part of an historic wave of diversity that puts the Motion Picture Academy to shame.
Julian Fellowes, creator and writer of PBS drama “Downton Abbey”, which earned 10 nominations on Thursday for its final season, told Reuters by phone: “Your fear with a long running series is that you’re going to kind of run out of puff and we were anxious to leave when people were sorry to see us go”.
Beyonce is nominated for outstanding directing for a variety special with “Lemonade”, which she shares with co-director Kahlil Joseph.
Lead nominations went to Cuba Gooding Jr.as Simpson, Courtney B. Vance as defense attorney Johnnie Cochran and Sarah Paulson as prosecutor Marcia Clark. “To receive an Emmy nomination today is the continuation of this phenomenal journey and is indeed a true blessing and honor”. Lesli Linka Glatter was recognized with her fourth Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, and David Klein received his second nomination for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series, both nominated for episode 502 – “The Tradition of Hospitality”. The biggest surprise in the Movie category, though, is the inclusion of Bill Murray’s trifle of a Netflix holiday special “A Very Murray Christmas”.
This category is a gantlet that’s hard for newcomers to muscle into, but “American Ninja Warrior” managed to complete the obstacle course this year for the first time in its three years of eligibility. The venerable “Survivor”, on the other hand, got voted off the island. There was no love for Stephen in the Variety-Talk category, which shut him out while welcoming CBS newcomer “The Late Late Show with James Corden” and even Crackle’s Jerry Seinfeld oddball interview show, “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee“.
Even late night, usually a reliable bastion for the major networks, took a small hit.

Notably, it’s also the one potential title in this category that doesn’t routinely generate viral videos.
