FX’s long-ignored show FINALLY scored some much needed attention, picking up nominations for stars Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys and the show itself.

Lena Heady, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams will go from fighting for the iron throne to fighting for the Emmy as all three actresses are competing in the Outstanding Supporting Actresses in a Drama Series category.

An outstanding short form variety series category has been created, along with outstanding actor in a short form comedy or drama series and outstanding actress in a short form comedy or drama categories.

Other nominees included Indian-American Aziz Ansari for his debut Netflix comedy “Master of None”, Egyptian-American Rami Malek for “Mr. Robot” and black actresses Taraji P. Henson for Fox’s hip-hop series “Empire” and Viola Davis in ABC’s thriller “How to Get Away with Murder”.

The show is in only its second season, and its star Anthony Anderson, who was nominated for best actor, was one of the presenters at the nomination ceremony this morning.

HBO became this year’s top nominated network because of shows such as “Game of Thrones”, “Silicon Valley”, and “Veep”. The awards will be televised live, September 18 on ABC, with Jimmy Kimmel as host.

While “Roots” was the only locally shot series to earn a major 2016 Emmy nomination, it was among a number of programs and performers whose nominations demonstrated an apparent desire by the TV Academy to avoid the sort of complaints over lack of diversity that dogged January’s Oscar nominations announcement. Comedy was the surprise runner-up to HBO at last year’s Emmys, bringing home four trophies, including three for Daily Show-a happy moment for departing Jon Stewart.

Hiddleston will compete for the best lead actor in a limited series award against Elba, who is nominated for Luther, and Cumberbatch, who has been recognised for Sherlock. Among the possible contenders include the TV sitcom “black-ish”, the transgender comedy “Transparent” and the Asian-American family comedy “Fresh Off the Boat”.
