Fantasy drama “Game of Thrones” led the field for television’s coveted Primetime Emmy awards Thursday for a third straight year, with nominations in 23 categories.

Bloodline’s Kyle Chandler-you know him from Friday Night Lights, if nothing else-Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul, and the only fictional POTUS to get a co-sign from the actual POTUS, House of Cards’ Frank Underwood, born Kevin Spacey, help make that category rather robust.
The nominees for best comedy series are: “black-ish”; “Master Of None”; “Modern Family”; “Silicon Valley”; “Transparent”; “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”; “Veep”.
The show is only in its second season, and its star Anthony Anderson, who was nominated for best actor, was also one of the presenters at the nomination ceremony this morning.
The idea – the hope – is that being nominated for and wining an Emmy raises the show’s and the network’s profile, attracts viewers and brings in the needed advertising dollars, Dergarabedian said, though he noted critically acclaimed doesn’t always correlate to popularity.
Amazon collected fewer accolades but still made gains, with 16 nods this year versus 12 in 2015.
Last year’s Emmy Awards dished out the typical expected wins, alongside some disappointments, surprises, and outright shutouts.
Veep, the U.S. version of The Thick Of It, earned 17 nominations including best comedy series, best lead actress in a comedy series for its star Julia-Louis Dreyfuss and outstanding direction in a comedy series for British comedian Chris Addison.
But there were no major nods for the stars of “Fresh Off the Boat” or other Asian-American actors, or for Latinos, which has been a recurrent Emmy pattern.
Cuba Gooding Jr. and Courtney B. Vance were both nominated in the leading actor category for their work in “The People Vs. O.J. Simpson“.
Actress, Drama Series: Taraji P. Henson, “Empire”; Claire Danes, “Homeland”; Robin Wright, “House of Cards”; Viola Davis, “How to Get Away With Murder”; Tatiana Maslany, “Orphan Black”; Keri Russell, “The Americans”.
In a phone interview, Paulson said that despite joy over her recognition she was happiest to learn that Brown was nominated for his portrayal of Darden.
Among the shows snubbed by Emmy voters in major categories this year was the Netflix prison dramedy “Orange is the New Black” and “The Good Wife”, a usual Emmy favourite that just ended its seven-year CBS run. “I owe my performance whatever it is to him”.
A host of stars from Game Of Thrones are also up for acting awards.
Meanwhile, Dame Maggie Smith is up for best supporting actress in a drama series for her role in Downton Abbey.
