Game of Thrones reigns supreme over Emmy nominations

ABC’s “black-ish”, which brought the African-American family comedy back to network TV and with a sharply relevant edge, received a best comedy nod and recognition for its stars, Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson.

In contrast, Netflix looked like a thoroughbred just starting to show what it can do.

Sarah Paulson is nominated for best lead actress in a limited series for her role as prosecutor Marcia Clark. So was Empire star Taraji P. Henson. Two-time victor Julianna Margulies, who was snubbed a year ago, is MIA, as is Christine Baranski, who was until now the only Good Wifeactor to have been nominated every season.

“Veep” will vie in the comedy category against HBO’s “Silicon Valley”, ABC’s “black-ish” and “Modern Family”, Netflix’s “Master of None” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”, and Amazon’s “Transparent”. Ditto for Netflix’s House of Cards.

Supporting Actress, Drama Series: Maura Tierney, “The Affair”; Maggie Smith, “Downton Abbey”; Lena Headey, “Game of Thrones”; Emilia Clarke, “Game of Thrones”; Maisie Williams, “Game of Thrones”. It would’ve been flawless for former WB/CW queen Lauren Graham, who co-announced the nominations with Anthony Anderson, to read off a CW lady’s name (i.e. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star and Golden Globe victor Rachel Bloom or Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez), but that sadly did not come to be.

In addition to the nominations for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy, the hit fourth season of the Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning “Inside Amy Schumer” received two other nominations this year, scoring its third consecutive nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series and its second consecutive for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series. Next in line is Fargo (18), Veep (17), and Saturday Night Live (16).

“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”, which recounted the football legend’s sensational, racially charged trial for the slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, is a best limited series nominee and earned a number of acting awards for its cast’s portrayal of well-known figures. However, Seinfeld only won the Emmy once for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1993.

Beyonce is also competing against comedian Chris Rock in the Outstanding Direction category, where he is nominated for his efforts behind the camera on “Amy Schumer: Live At The Apollo”.

A host of stars from Game Of Thrones are also up for acting awards.

Guest Actress in a Drama Series: Margo Martindale, “The Americans”; Carrie Preston, “The Good Wife”; Laurie Metcalf, “Horace and Pete”; Ellen Burstyn, “House of Cards;” Molly Parker, “House of Cards”; Allison Janney, “Masters of Sex”. A drama series nod would’ve been a first for Lifetime.

Television Movie: “All the Way”, “Confirmation”, “Luther”, “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride”, “A Very Murray Christmas”. This year’s ceremony will air September 18 on ABC.
