Seven killed, 11 injured in vehicle bomb attack near Baghdad

Wednesday’s bombing was the second attack in the al-Rashidiya district to claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) in as many days.

At least five people were killed and 10 others injured in a car-bomb blast in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Wednesday, according to an Iraqi policeman.

Last week, IS killed more than 300 people in two attacks.

In the attack Tuesday, at least 12 people were killed after a suicide vehicle bomber blew himself up near a crowded fruit and vegetable market.

The bombing at a checkpoint leading to the Husseiniyah area, northeast of the capital, also wounded 21 people, the officials said. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to talk to the media.

Almost 300 people were killed and another 200 were wounded – making the bombing the single deadliest in the nation since US-led forces toppled Saddam Hussein 13 years ago.

IS claimed a massive truck bombing in downtown Baghdad last week that killed 292 people, making it among the deadliest attacks in Iraq since the 2003 USA -led invasion.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, although the Islamic State (IS) group has carried out many similar bombings in the capital and other parts of Iraq.

ISIS has been weakened in Iraq and Syria in recent months because of battlefield losses and desertions, and some analysts have suggested that the group is in danger of losing its so-called caliphate, territory controlled by the group that stretches from eastern Syria to western Iraq.
