Permits for Hunt May Outnumber Actual Bears
The agency has guaranteed at least a two-day season. Black bears were once a rare sight in Florida, but thanks to the efforts of the FWC and conservationists, the population has rebounded to around 4,000, which is only a conservative estimate. The seven-day season begins October. 24.

“Fish and Wildlife commissioners are acting against the interests of Floridians, science and Florida black bears”, said Jaclyn Lopez, Florida director at the Center for Biological Diversity. Data from the FWC show that in 2013, there were 6,667 bear nuisance calls, compared to 100 in 1995.
Since sales started Monday, almost 1,200 permits for Florida’s bear hunt have been sold. “Currently the Central Florida bear population is a liability because it is not valued as the renewable resource that God designed it as”. A harvest quota is the limit on how many bears can be killed.
For more information, visit the FWC bear permit website. The hunt will take part in four regions of the state.
Special use permits for the first bear season in the Sunshine State this century went on sale this week and hunter’s rights advocate Ted Nugent picked one up.
An advocacy group, Speak Up Wekiva, filed a lawsuit in Tallahassee last week challenging the hunt. But it’s still a very conservative hunt. “The rugs are magnificent”.

And the Nuge is one of some 1,100 hunters who have ponied up the cash – $100 for residents, $300 for non-residents – to attempt and obtain a Florida black bear. The FWC also intends on ramping up programs to educate residents on coexisting with bears, including proper trash disposal.
