“Game of Thrones” won a record 12 Emmys last fall, including best drama.
After fully transitioning to an online voting system last year, the Academy saw a 22 per cent increase in participation for this year’s nomination round.
The nods for the series also included best supporting actor and actress nominations for last year’s victor Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Lena Headley, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams and nods for writers David Benioff and D B Weiss.
Regina King, who won last year for supporting actress in a limited series for “American Crime”, was nominated again in the same category for playing a different character in this year’s installment.
Randall Park and Constance Wu, the stars of the Asian-American family comedy “Fresh Off the Boat”, are contenders for lead acting bids.
With three open slots in comedy lead actress, it’s not a complete shocker that the Black-ish star earned a nod.
The Kenya Barris-created show should get a shot at the best comedy trophy for its sophomore season, with its competitors likely to include last year’s victor, the political satire “Veep”, five-time champ “Modern Family”, transgender-themed “Transparent” and Aziz Ansari’s “Master of None”.
Hiddleston is nominated for his role in the popular BBC series The Night Manager, while his co-stars Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman earned nods in the supporting role categories.
Lead nominations went to Cuba Gooding Jr.as Simpson, Courtney B. Vance as defense attorney Johnnie Cochran and Sarah Paulson as prosecutor Marcia Clark.
“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”, which recounted the football legend’s sensational, racially charged trial for the slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, is a best limited series nominee and earned a number of acting awards for its cast’s portrayal of well-known figures. “I owe my performance whatever it is to him”.
Other nominees included Indian-American Aziz Ansari for his debut Netflix comedy “Master of None”, Egyptian-American Rami Malek for “Mr. Robot” and black actresses Taraji P. Henson for Fox’s hip-hop series “Empire” and Viola Davis in ABC’s thriller “How to Get Away with Murder”.
