Donald Trump, skipping over one of his strongest allies, N.J. Gov. Chris Christie, has picked Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate, according various reports.

“In light of the awful attack in Nice, France, I have postponed tomorrow’s news conference concerning my vice presidential announcement”, he tweeted.

Donald Trump is on the verge of picking his vice presidential running mate, with top contenders told to expect a decision as early as Thursday afternoon.

“He knows how to govern”, said Brina Sanft, a King County Trump volunteer.

The decision represents an attempt to unite the Republican party and bring political experience to the businessman’s campaign.

While in Washington, he chaired the Republican Study Group, a coalition of hard-core conservatives, which gives him solid bona fides among the grass-roots Tea Party wing of the party that has occasional doubts about Mr Trump’s ideological purity. He also has deep ties to evangelical Christians and other conservatives, particularly after signing a law past year that critics said would have allowed businesses to deny service to gay people for religious reasons.

NBC News reported Thursday that Pence landed in New Jersey. Pence later signed an amendment to the law protecting the rights of LGBT people.

House Speaker Paul Ryan praised Pence Thursday: “It’s no secret I’m a big fan of Mike Pence’s”.

He says, “We’ll find out what Donald Trump decides to do”.

“I think it is appropriate that I make plain today that, should there be a sudden need to name a new nominee for governor, I will not present myself as a candidate nor would I accept the nomination if offered”, Daniels said in a statement. “On reflection, my recent remarks in response to press inquiries were ill-advised and I regret making them”, she said in a statement. “I think it’s a good move as far as the geographics go”, referencing his Midwestern and Rust Belt appeal.

The reports of Pence’s selection were greeted positively by Senator Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican usually critical of Trump, who said that if the Pence news is true as he assumes, it’s the best thing Trump has done.

Trump’s choice of running mate is seen as critical because his defeat of 16 rivals in the Republican primary race left the party divided and some party leaders are still uneasy about some of his campaign positions, and his style.
