Pence, potential replacements face Indiana ballot deadline

Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign says Donald Trump has “doubled down” on what the Clinton team calls his “disturbing beliefs” by choosing Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate.

“Mike Pence has a model family, he is a devout Christian, he can speak intelligently about faith issues, can speak intelligently and compellingly about anything and I think he will be a very solid running mate”.

“Every American is entitled to a fair trial and an impartial judge, but of course I think those comments were inappropriate”, Pence said June 7, the Indianapolis Star reported, the week after fresh Trump comments on Curiel stirred a national controversy.

Due to the terror attack in France, Donald Trump has postponed the announcement of his Vice President choice, which had been scheduled for later this morning. He also has deep ties to evangelical Christians and other conservatives, particularly after signing a law a year ago that critics said would have allowed businesses to deny service to gay people for religious reasons. But the businessman put those questions to rest Friday when he tweeted that he was “pleased” to announce Pence as his No. 2. But state law bars him from running for that office and also appearing on the ballot as a candidate for vice president. Sources had told Reuters earlier that Trump had been leaning toward Pence but cautioned that he could still change his mind.

The 22-member panel would have 30 days to select a new nominee for governor, but former state Republican Chairman Mike McDaniel said he expects a decision will be sooner.

But Manafort dismissed suggestions in an interview on Fox News Channel that Trump was having second thoughts about his choice.

“We’ll find out what Donald Trump decides to do”, he said.

Trump will make his official announcement at an 11 a.m. event in Manhattan.

The paperwork has been drawn up for him to take that step, according to a Republican who was not authorized to publicly discuss the plans and insisted on anonymity.

News corespondent Major Garrett, who was in Indianapolis this week for Donald Trump’s visit, said that he was on a flight out of Indianapolis to NY with Marc Lotter, the deputy manager for Gov. Mike Pence’s reelection campaign. Correspondent Major Garrett pointed out that Pence was picked to “bring staunch conservatism.to the ticket”, had “carved out a record of social and economic conservatism” in Congress, and had “long-standing ties with the Koch brothers, wealthy conservative donors”.

Trump has spent much of the last week in IN, grounded by an aircraft malfunction to his private jet, and whiled away the days by holding de facto auditions with three contenders: Pence, New Jersey governor Chris Christie and former House speaker Newt Gingrich.

Adding intrigue to the day, Pence’s deputy campaign manager, Marc Lotter, was spotted at Indianapolis airport Thursday waiting to board a flight to New York City. Local television stations posted video showing him arriving at a private airport outside NY and then entering a hotel.

“The Pences enjoyed spending warm, productive time with the Trumps”, said Pence spokesman Marc Lotter in a statement the following day. Talks broke down Thursday between party leaders and recalcitrant conservatives seeking to “unbind” convention delegates and let them back any presidential candidate they’d like. JOHN DICKERSON: Well, he is not of Washington, but he has some Washington experience, and Donald Trump said he wanted to pick somebody who could help him actually get something done in Washington. And Trump’s base might object to Pence’s pro-trade voting record and attacks on Trump’s proposed Muslim ban.
