Trump tapped Pence to be his running mate on Thursday, according to multiple media reports, as he tried to spark enthusiasm among evangelical Republicans who have so far been skeptical of the free-wheeling real estate mogul’s campaign. It is more likely, with the convention drawing near, that Trump has made his decision and Gingrich is his choice.
But the real question is why Fox decided to make this move now, a couple days before Trump announces his pick. This could be a complete government outsider such as retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn or someone as simple as a former contender whose name is no longer in the running, such as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
The network suspended its contributor contract with Gingrich Tuesday afternoon, citing “intense media speculation” about Trump choosing Gingrich as his running mate. Fox News may have dropped a hint today when it chose to suspend Gingrich’s contributor agreement with the network based on “media speculation” that Newt could be the pick.
Gingrich, who has been a supporter of Trump’s presidential run from the early stages, believes he has a good shot at the spot.
Donald Trump and Newt Gingrich. He eventually dropped out of the race and backed Mitt Romney for president.
“If you had an opportunity to help lead the country, I don’t see how you could turn it down”, Gingrich said of Trump tapping him for VP. “And I promise you if I am the nominee, I’ll be a nominee with Facebook Live”.
“Gingrich is like a Churchill”, said Jamie Johnson, a former adviser to Texas Gov. Rick Perry during the 2016 cycle and Santorum in 2012.
Trump said that his pick will be one of the politicians who has been publicly discussed, and that he doesn’t plan to make an out-of-the-blue choice. “When Americans look to those at the top of the political game, especially in the past couple of years, their eyes roll”.
