Eiffel Tower catches fire during Bastille Day fireworks

While some thought the Eiffel Tower was on fire, Paris police tweeted that the smoke was actually from a truck carrying fireworks that accidentally caught fire nearby.

There were fears Paris had once again been targeted by terrorists tonight as smoke billowed from beneath the Eiffel Tower.

The incident occurred at the same time as Nice, in southern France, experienced a terror attack. But it wasn’t, and the structure itself was never in flames. Fear-mongering extremist and conspiracy web sites seized upon photos and video of the event, however, misleadingly presenting them as “evidence” that the entire country was under coordinated attack.

In a message shared on Twitter, the force said: ‘Do not spread false rumors. “No fire at the #TourEiffel. It has been put out”.

Images of the thick black smoke provoked panic that it was linked to an attack in Nice this evening, but that rumour was immediately quashed by French police.
