“Sherlock” returns in 2017 on BBC One in the United Kingdom and PBS in the U.S. It is set in present-day London and follows “consulting detective” Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr. Watson as they solve various crimes around the area.
The problem isn’t for lack of trying, though: it’s just that the show’s main actors, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, are such big worldwide stars now that they don’t have as much time to dedicate to the series.
He explained: “I’m amazed that we’ve got this far”.
And while there might not be any Star Trek in the mix, as usual, there are more than two dozen nominees who have Star Trek conventions. “I’m personally willing but I’m hardly the main draw”, Moffat says. We’ve certainly seen now with “Gilmore Girls” and “Prison Break” that you can take super-long breaks only to then come back and tell more stories when everyone is on the same page again.
It’s not entirely reassuring, but Moffat said he would be “moderately surprised” if season 4 was the last and admitted that this isn’t the first time he’s thought the series could be reaching its end.
‘This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have become Hollywood heavyweights since the drama first launched, and the gaps between seasons have become longer as a result of their hectic schedules. “Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street – and it always feels like coming home”, the duo said in a statement. And to hear Moffat talk about it in a recent interview with The Telegraph, this could be the last couple of episodes for this iteration of the classic detective.
