We’re still more than three weeks out from the opening of the superhero flick, but pre-release tracking suggests that fans are curious to see a villainous gang tasked with saving the day. It’s arguably one of the most anticipated films of this summer, featuring Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, and many more of your favorite actors and actresses. Guardians of the Galaxy set the previous August record, opening to $94.3 million domestically in 2014.

The Suicide Squad has a rich history in comics that stretches way back to the Silver Age, and the one constant is Col. Rick Flag Jr. Warner Bros. hasn’t released a budget, but that kind of additional photography is usually pricey. You have a team of villains that the majority of people don’t have a clue about. From what we have seen in trailers, it looks like little to none of the communique she’s adorned it with actually made it into the film.

With the projections coming in as solidly as they are, DC has caught something special in the way they marketed Suicide Squad. They know it’s affiliated with DC’s stuff and a glimpse of Batman in the movie but for the most part, expectations were never that high. It’s resonating with both hardcore fans and general audiences, making them feel it’s something fresh and new. Or will they tailor it to the character? In that atmosphere, “Suicide Squad’s” tracking could give the industry hope that things might be on the upswing.
