His replacement is Home Secretary Theresa May, who will become Britain’s second female Prime Minister.

Later in the afternoon he tendered his formal resignation to Queen Elizabeth II, who then had an audience with Theresa May, inviting her to form a new government.
Instead, he will be in place to welcome Cameron’s successor, Theresa May, and her husband Philip- while trying to keep the famous residence and offices vermin-free.
“Clearly now we have a massive opportunity in this country to make a great success of our relationship with Europe and with the world and I’m very excited to be asked to play a part in that”, he told the BBC. But The Sun said Cameron had been “undone by his Olympian overconfidence”, while the Guardian called him a “prime minister of broken promises”.
Referring to the full name of her party, the Conservative and Unionist Party, the Prime Minister also promised to “maintain the precious, precious bond between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland”.
Russia’s President Putin for his part sent a message to May confirming “his willingness to have a constructive dialogue and to collaborate with the British Prime Minister about current issues concerning bilateral relations and the global agenda”, the Kremlin said.
Davis, a senior Conservative lawmaker who was beaten by former prime minister David Cameron in the party’s 2005 leadership election contest, was appointed to the newly-created role of Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union.
May’s first speech as prime minister had echoes of Thatcher’s debut speech in 1979, which quoted from St Francis of Assisi: “Where there is discord, may we bring harmony”.
“Following the referendum, we face a time of great national change”, May said, according to the AP.
In his last words in front of Downing Street he said “We’ve not got every decision right…but our economy is immeasurably stronger”.
May herself had sided with Cameron in trying to keep Britain inside the European Union, so she now need to reach out to the winning “Leave” side in order to heal divisions and show her commitment to respecting the popular vote.
Cameron made a decision to step down after six years as premier following the June 23 referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union, in which 17.4 million people voted to leave the bloc.
May campaigned for the leadership as a safe pair of hands, after spending six years as home secretary, one of the toughest jobs in British politics.
It’s time, however, that European Union leaders do not want to offer.
“I am personally delighted at your appointment”, said Cardinal Nichols.

A White House spokesman congratulated May on her new position, adding that President Barack Obama was hoping for an “orderly process and a good-faith negotiation between the United Kingdom and the European Union”.
