US Navy’s top admiral to visit China, discuss S China Sea

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said that they hope “Australia should firmly abide by the promise not to hold a position when there is a territorial dispute”.

The statement did not elaborate.

Beijing has laid claims on about 90 percent of the South China Sea, incensing its South Asian neighbors including Vietnam, Malaysia and Philippines, which are allies of the United States. However, the ambassador added that Beijing was committed to negotiate with other parties regarding the South China Sea issues.

Even after a formal protest from the Chinese, the Australian foreign minister refused to back down.

China has rejected this week’s ruling by the permanent court of arbitration in The Hague that it has no historical title over the South China Sea and that it has violated the Philippines’ economic and sovereign rights. “The award is a historic win not only for the Philippines…it renews humanity’s faith in a rules based global order”, Calida told a forum. It’s a decision that is about maritime rights under that convention. Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte said late on Thursday he wanted to start talks with China, although he suggested some careful thinking would be needed first.
