Theresa May seeks time from European Union to negotiate Brexit
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel added his voice to those pleading for a speedy start to the Brexit procedure, following three weeks of financial and political turmoil triggered by Britain’s vote to leave Europe.

Three weeks after the referendum, May’s new government faces the formidably complex task of extricating Britain from the European Union – itself reeling from the shock of Brexit – while trying to protect the economy from feared disruption to confidence, trade and investment.
Cameron also stressed his love for Larry, the Downing Street cat – amid rumours that he was not a fan – a point he later emphasised on Twitter and swapped warm wishes with Jeremy Corbyn, saying he had nearly come to admire the Labour leader’s “tenacity” in hanging on to his job.
Now, after Mr Cameron formally resigned, the Queen has appointed Mrs May, making her the UK’s second ever female Prime Minister, and she has gained the backing of Somerset MPs.
After her appointment, May promised that Britain will leave the European Union and will be able to “forge a bold new positive role” for itself.
Mr Liddell-Grainger said: “Theresa May was clearly the outstanding candidate and she commands a great deal of respect, both within her party, within the country and internationally”.
Hammond told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “We will face some challenges in the short term in managing the economy. As we leave the European Union, we will forge a bold new positive role for ourselves in the world”, she said before entering the prime minister’s official residence at No. 10 Downing Street.
British Prime Minister Theresa May filled out her cabinet posts Thursday, assembling a government that sweeps away many of her predecessor’s supporters and places strongly anti-EU figures in key global roles. But David’s true legacy is not about the economy but about social justice. Ironically, despite the fact May campaigned to remain, she will be more likely to implement the vote as she tries to appease Leavers in the government who believe a Brexiteer should be leading the country.
He helped lead the economic recovery, cut the deficit, created record employment, lifted thousands of low income households out of paying tax and reformed stamp duty.
But she has said the process should not be launched before the end of year, to give time for Britain to draw up its negotiating strategy.
There was a small protest near Downing Street on Wednesday, with its participants calling for a general election to be held in the country instead of the appointment of a new Tory PM, Reuters reported.
Lesley Fairfax, 70, Taunton “She seems like a very sensible lady, I wouldn’t have liked to see Boris Johnson get in”.
Only on Monday did May learn that she would become prime minister, when the last remaining contender to lead the ruling Conservative Party, Andrea Leadsom, quit the race.
The former home secretary is well-known in Brussels.
European Parliament president Martin Schulz has already called for exit negotiations to start quickly. It regularly is said that a week is a long time in politics, but prime ministers need always to think several months if not years ahead.
In an apparent attempt at a clean break, May ditched finance minister George Osborne, Cameron’s closest ally.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve our country as prime minister over these last six years, and to serve as leader of my party for nearly 11 years”, he said.
Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron, his wife Samantha and their children Nancy (left), Florence and Elwen, leave 10 Downing Street, in London on Wednesday.
He will be then driven up to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II after which May will have her own audience at the palace when she will accept the monarch’s offer to form a new government. As the country’s longest-running home secretary, she regularly attended justice and home affairs council meetings in Brussels and Luxembourg, though her tough line on refugees put her at odds with the push from the European Commission and Berlin past year for greater burden-sharing among EU member states.

Although May had backed remaining in the European Union, she has reassured “leave” supporters that “Brexit means Brexit, and we will make a success of it”.
