Andy Murray targeting Novak Djokovic’s No1 spot after Wimbledon glory
Serbia’s world number one Novak Djokovic is also set to miss the Davis Cup tie after saying he needed to rest following his shock defeat by American Sam Querrey at the All England Club.

Moments after accepting his trophy and retreating to the clubhouse, the Scotsman was greeted by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who had been in attendance at the royal box Sunday as Murray claimed his second Wimbledon title in a straight-sets victory over Canadian Milos Raonic.
Murray is now a three-time Grand Slam Champion, holding two Wimbledon titles and one US open title. “That was probably around the time where I started to accept that it’s OK to not achieve what you want, if you’re doing everything you possibly can”.
He conceded the obvious point that Djokovic is still the best player in the world, but he has renewed expectations now of winning more slams. “I’d imagine he’ll come back very strong from the loss here”.
Murray, a 29-year-old from Scotland, long dealt with the expectations that accompanied being Britain’s best chance to find a male champion to succeed Fred Perry, who last won the grass-court tournament in 1936.
Murray has reached all three Grand Slam finals in 2016, losing the previous two in Australia and France to Djokovic.
How much did winning this title mean to Murray?
“I think after Wimbledon last time, the few months afterwards I found motivation hard and then I had my back surgery”. But I stuck to my game plan very well today.
Second seed Murray defeated the sixth-seeded Canadian 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) in a match lasting two hours and 50 minutes in front of a packed Centre Court.
The world number seven insists he has learned from his latest encounter with Murray and will be more resilient this time around.
“I’ll chat to him this afternoon to make a final decision”.
During the trophy presentation, Murray joked: “Playing in a Wimbledon final’s tough, but I certainly wouldn’t like to be a prime minister”.
Murray said: “I don’t know what my legacy will be”.
“The amount of consistency he’s had has been phenomenal, so if I want to get there I’m going to have to keep up the form I’ve had in the last five tournaments”, Murray said of the Serbian’s position. “I was obviously extremely emotional … but I feel like I’m going to enjoy this one”.
That is followed by the Rio Olympics, where Murray will defend his singles title and will hope to win a medal in the doubles with brother Jamie. “The emotion is from thinking about the journey since the last time he won a slam and how much work everyone has put in despite all the change and all of the adversity that comes along with it”.
“I don’t mind failing”, he said.

“I wasn’t thinking about that week, maybe Cincinnati or something like that. He is one of the hardest workers out there, always trying to improve and get better”.
