‘Ghostbusters’ provides relief for fans but little more

The new “Ghostbusters” stars Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones in the roles originally created by Ramis, Ackroyd, Murray and Hudson. They are so much of our childhoods growing up.

Throw in some nice action moments and you’re left with a film that should satisfy most summer audiences, but also a film that isn’t quite good enough to silence its online critics.

But none of the slime sticks – this “Ghostbusters” is a fleet-footed and amusing delight, a faithful homage to the original movie that salutes its source material without feeling bound by it. It was entertaining and a great way to get younger generations enticed to marathon the old films.

Ghostbusters opens in theaters this weekend!

I get that fans are passionate about the things they love; I don’t understand the sense of ownership that so often accompanies today’s fandom and the personal offense many fans take whenever change occurs. It was finally made a decision to move forward with a script centering on a female cast reestablishing the paranormal investigative agency. Kate and Leslie and Kristen and myself, we all have a different perspective on the world and, even if we’re similar, everybody has a different spin on things and to make all that work so harmoniously is incredible.

Working from a screenplay that he co-wrote with Katie Dippold, director Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids”) maintains just the right balance between humor and horror.

Sony’s comedy, which also stars Chris Hemsworth, is set in Manhattan, where a ghost invasion forces a couple of paranormal enthusiasts, a nuclear engineer and subway worker to band together to stop the threat. Even when you’ve got everything going for it. He’s the team’s receptionist and proves he does more than just swing a hammer and look hunky. Nobody mentioned that he is bizarrely amusing, like a geeky guy who’s never dated and has to be amusing. He was improvising insane stuff for his interview scene and it all made sense.

This film reminded us of a Universal Studios Tram Tour. “I heard someone say ‘nothing supernatural” and I thought ‘no that can’t be.’ So maybe that’s happening, ‘ Hemsworth told AAP. I definitely wasn’t bothered by the fact that the men were being replaced by women, although many “Ghostbusters” aficionados were distressed over the replacement. Better yet, it should put to rest that question about whether women can be amusing – they definitely are in this film! The lesson? As always, don’t pre-judge a movie before you’ve seen it. “I should take that three story fall”.
