Police officer wounded, suspect dead after exchanging shots

But within hours, the city’s police chief released a detailed account of what happened, defended his officers’ actions and credited the deceased man’s mother with pacifying angry neighbors.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been identified as Ryan Bailey, who is black, and Jacob DeBoard, who is white, Lepley said.

The Richmond police chief says an armed suspect who was killed in a shootout with police fired first and his two officers have been justified in returning hearth.

The chief says Hargrove, who is black, fired first after refusing police commands to drop his weapon.

According to the police chief, results of an internal investigation will be turned over in about a month to the Richmond prosecutor.

The incident was the latest in a string of deaths of black men at the hands of police in the past year, including in Ferguson, Missouri; New York; and North Charleston, South Carolina.

Durham said that Hargrove was shot once.
