Newt Gingrich out as Fox contributor

Who a major-party nominee chooses, and how, is one of the most importance decisions – if not the most importance decision – a candidate will make.

Fox news suspended its contributor agreement with Newt Gingrich Tuesday amid speculation that he could be Republican Donald Trump’s pick for vice president.

Throughout much of the talk, Gingrich praised Trump’s prowess as a politician and negotiator, noting his success on television, in real estate development and other ventures.

Jay Wallace, executive vice president of news at Fox, said Tuesday the network thought it was best to stop Gingrich as a contributor to avoid any conflicts of interest.

“Conservatives seem to be instantly comforted when Gingrich is mentioned as a running mate”, says Rick Tyler, a former Ted Cruz aide and spokesman for Gingrich’s 2012 campaign.

Why does this matter? His comments were a mix of pointed criticism and awe at Trump’s political skills.

Gingrich was also suspended from Fox News in 2011, as he was vying for the GOP presidential nomination. “I operate on the premise that when people are doing something really smart, even if I don’t like it or I don’t understand it, it’s my job to figure them out, not their job to figure me out”. That interview came hours before David Samson, whom Christie appointed to chair the powerful Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, pleaded guilty to scheming to get United Airlines to run direct flights between New Jersey and SC, where he has a vacation home. “They’re going to want to dominate the weekend news with the vice presidential selection”, he theorized.

Asked to choose from a list of 22 topics driving their choice of a political candidate this year, education emerges on top for young Americans, with 31 percent listing it among their top three issues.

While Gingrich worked closely with then-President Clinton on key legislative priorities, he also led the impeachment charges against him and then acknowledged his own affair during those proceedings.

“There are a few reasons I think Newt Gingrich would be the best running mate for Donald Trump”. Maybe the former Speaker is taking a temporary leave from the network and will re-establish his role later this year. It does, however, ratchet up the intrigue a bit.
