Nice attack: Four men held over lorry attack that killed 84

Two victims were identified on Friday as Americans Sean Copeland, 51, and his son, Brodie, 11, from Texas, the Austin American-Statesman reported, citing a statement from the family. The organization is soliciting donations and says funds will be used to support French Red Cross emergency preparedness, response and relief teams.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, asked on Friday if he could confirm the attacker’s motives were linked to jihadism, said: “No….”

The Library of Birmingham was being lit up in red, white and blue tonight as France mourned the Nice terror attack which claimed more than 80 lives.

The attack unfolded on Thursday around 10:30pm local time, when a large truck turned left onto the Promenade des Anglais, a seaside boulevard filled with an enormous crowd of spectators. The 84 dead included French and foreigners, children and adults. A total of 202 people have been injured, among which 52 are in critical condition and 25 still in reanimation. He wrestled with the driver, who seized a revolver and fired several shots at the man and at police officers who arrived on the scene. The witness said he saw only the driver.

He said everyone ran, many into a restaurant. “I just hope again that we can find a way to live in this world without this kind of thing going on”.

He added that the government will win the war against terrorism, but warned the French public that other attacks would happen in the future. Two US citizens were among the dead. Earlier Thursday, thousands of people had gathered in Paris to watch the traditional Bastille Day military parade and fireworks displays were held across France.

He denied there were security failures and that the attack could have been prevented.

The country is still reeling from the November 13 attacks that killed 130 people at the Bataclan concert hall, Paris restaurants and cafes, and the national stadium, and a separate January 2015 iParis attack that targeted journalists at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and Jews at a kosher supermarket. Rihanna posted on Instagram, “Due to the tragic events in #Nice, my concert scheduled for tomorrow July 15 at Allianz Stadium will not be going ahead as planned”.

The US leader slammed the “death and nihilism that terrorists offer”, and said that “the hatred and violence of a few ultimately is no match for the love and decency and hard work of people of good will and compassion”.
