Gurriel left Cuba in February 2016 and was declared a free agent in June.

“Until things are official I’m not going to comment on it”, Hinch said. Reports indicated that the Mets held interest in the infielder but were unlikely to sign him. “We’ll have to wait for the official announcement”.

Gurriel’s 22-year-old brother Lourdes left Cuba with Yulieski and is considered a top prospect, though Major League Baseball has not declared him a free agent.

Gourriel represented Cuba in three World Baseball Classic tournaments and also was a member of Cuba’s Olympic team in 2008. His name was spelled Gourriel during the Olympics and WBC previously.
