Stanton wins MLB Home Run Derby

Each round consisted of each batter getting four minutes, with the clock starting with the release of the first pitch. Sure, Stanton only hit 6 total in his only other Derby appearance back in 2014, but changing the rules to bracketed, time-limited rounds really benefits hitters.

Sale says “I quit that day, and I haven’t touched it since”, adding “I owe him a huge thank you for not only myself but for my family”. Among Trumbo’s blasts was a mammoth 479-foot homer. The 22-year-old silenced the crowd with 15 home runs, but was outdone by Trumbo, who still had time remaining when he hit his 16th.

Stanton outslugged defending champion Todd Frazier 20-13 in the finals at Petco Park in San Diego. But perhaps more impressive than the quantity was the distance attached to them.

And Stanton didn’t cheat the fans either with those 338-foot homers down the line. He has the two longest homers in the majors in that time (494 and 490 feet).

The derby gives the chance for the strongest swings of the league to compete hitting home runs. It’s not normal to be able to create that much bat speed and hit the ball that far. An American League player had won the derby each of the previous five seasons.

Stanton put on quite the exhibition in the All-Star eve event.

The timed format, introduced a year ago, allowed Stanton to find his rhythm and start playing a game of pepper with the fans beneath the scoreboard in left center.

Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera will be Detroit’s lone representative in tonight’s All-Star Game at Petco Park in San Diego. He is not heading to the All-Star Game but Stanton did make an appearance at Home Run Derby, and a big one. Stanton’s batting average now sits at. He edged Dodgers rookie Joc Pederson 15-14 with a late surge in the final round, and he’ll have to hold off another L.A. rookie in Corey Seager to win this year.

Stanton wowed everyone with his virtuoso performance, but I don’t think anyone could have predicted he’d hit 61 homers. He wound up pounding 17 more over the course of the night in Chicago in going on to win the event.

Although the betting favored, Stanton was seeded No. 5 and had the disadvantage of not knowing how many homers he’d need to advance.
