Thousands of Pokemon GO users despaired this afternoon as servers struggled to cope with the incredible popularity of the smartphone app.

According to Reddit, a hacking group called PoodleCorp claimed responsibility for the servers being down. “Please try again soon!” Since the release, the developer Niantic has been facing server issues due to the massive traffic overload as fans all over the world want to play the game.

Gamers worldwide have taken to social media complaining that the cult game has crashed. “I’m just going to sit here. completely still”.

But despite the servers being down and little chance of coming back online this evening, keen Pokemon trainers persisted in their meet-up, gathering in Piccadilly Gardens at 4pm as planned.

Australia, New Zealand and the United States were among the first countries to officially gain access to the mobile game, though users elsewhere have been able to download it to their smartphones using workarounds such as changing their App Store location.

Another user said: “So far my auto has failed it’s MOT then Kante leaves us for Chelsea and now Pokemon Go won’t sign me in!”
