McIlroy snaps 3-wood in 2 pieces at British Open

TROON, Scotland – Frustration got the best of Rory McIlroy on Saturday afternoon at Royal Troon when he threw his 3-wood from over his head onto the ground, causing the head to snap off the shaft.

At the US Open in 2013 he also apologised for throwing one club and leaning so hard on another during the final round that he bent the shaft out of shape.

‘The clubhead came loose on it earlier in the week so I had to get it re-glued so it is partly to do with that and partly the throw itself, ‘ said the four-time major victor.

“I’ve been saying all week that the first seven holes is where you need to make your scoring, make your birdies so to be two-over after three wasn’t ideal obviously”.

After dropping early bogeys, things didn’t get much better for McIlroy on the back nine. It was basically a bad swing’. No one likes to make the same mistake twice.

“The truck’s here, so I’ll have it reshafted, and all will be well in the morning”.

The Hollywood native managed just two birdies in his two over par round of 73, leaving him well adrift of the leaders at Royal Troon.

The Northern Irishman’s approach at the par-five 16th veered right and his angry reaction led to his three-wood breaking on impact with the fairway.

McIlroy has history in the club-throwing department, launching a 3-iron into the water at Doral past year, only to have course owner Donald Trump send in a frogman to recover it.

Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson are vying for the Claret Jug this year and appear unlikely to be troubled by the chasing pack. “It’s tough to make your mind up and commit to something which is why I missed a couple of short ones”.
