Donald Trump picks Indiana Governor Mike Pence as running mate

USA Today says that Trump’s move to choose Pence is a strategy to win total Republican support which is not comfortable with the entrepreneur’s candidacy.

Still, Pence’s credibility with evangelical Christians – a group that has mixed feelings for Trump – along with his tax-cutting record as governor and anti-spending record as a congressman are key assets he’d bring to the Republican ticket.

Pence said that Trump “is a man that appreciates candour”. He added: “He’s a solid, solid person”. The governor said it had “become a subject of great misunderstanding and controversy across our state and nation”.

We found mixed opinions abound about Pence in the city just shy of 45,000 people. “We’re exhausted of being told that this is as good as it gets”.

The reaction to the Pence choice from Republican officials was overwhelmingly positive – no small feat for Mr Trump, given how polarising he has been within his own party.

Christie said the day before the announcement on MSNBC that while he would continue to focus on making sure Trump was elected president, it would “bother him” if he were not chosen. “I want to be an outsider”. Not anymore. Most significantly, David and Charles Koch refused to back Trump for president.

The two did not walk out together, appearing at each other’s side only after Trump delivered a rambling 28-minute address that included a plug for his new hotel in Washington. And his solidly conventional political background runs counter to Trump’s anti-establishment mantra.

CNN reported Friday that Trump was so unsure of Pence as his selection that he asked aides around midnight whether he could still get out of it.

He said that the reason Trump was able to emerge the victor of the Republican primary was because of his Reagan-like powers of perception. He predicted that Pence would have won re-election as governor, were he not running for vice president.

“Many people who were skeptical of Trump will find Pence a very reassuring choice”. “He feels that things are supposed to happen – provenance – because they are meant to happen”.

A critical episode in derailing a Pence presidential bid came in March 2015, when he signed into law the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a state law that allowed businesses to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals in the name of their professed religious principles.

The head of “Citizens for Trump” stated, “Well God never had no Vice-God did he? that’s kind of like what Trump is now, a Father for all Americans”. Pence is an experience politician, favored by the more conservative right-wingers, is mild-tempered and can likely provide refined policy explanations and justifications.

Trump was up against a clock in unveiling his pick.

Pence, who had flown to be in NY on Thursday night, was originally scheduled to have been announced as the nominee at an event on Friday morning. Pence is out; what’s next for IN governor’s race?

Pence was less equivocal on another of Trump’s signature policy proposals: a 2,000-mile wall along the Mexican border.

He has publicly backed the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the sweeping trade deal that Trump has repeatedly blasted as bad for United States jobs. Clinton has previously called Trump the most divisive candidate “in our lifetimes”, referring to his calls to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the country and to deport millions of undocumented immigrants.
