Addressing the waiting media outside No 10 before heading to Buckingham Palace to formally resign, Cameron sought to paint a positive picture of his time in office, despite it ending suddenly after the European Union referendum result.
In a series of congratulatory phone calls taken by Mrs May on Wednesday evening, the UK’s second female prime minister spoke to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny. “I’ve seen that service day in and day out, armed forces, intelligence agencies and police”, he said.
“He isn’t returning to us as I feel we never lost him, he has been incredibly diligent at attending constituency engagements and surgeries and continuing to play a full and active role in West Oxfordshire life throughout his time as Prime Minister”.
Cameron stepped down after Britons rejected his entreaties to stay in the EU, a decision that has set back European efforts to forge greater unity and created huge uncertainty in Britain and across the 28-nation bloc.
Mrs May also paid tribute to her predecessor, David Cameron, saying he had been “a great modern prime minister”.
“Other than one meeting this afternoon with her majesty the Queen, the diary for the rest of my day is remarkably light”, he said to laughter, as his wife Samantha and their children looked on from the public gallery.
He then prompted laughter across the House as he adopted an American accent to recount the time he was greeted by a member of the public in NY when he was Leader of the Opposition. May has indicated she does not intend to do that this year.
Johnson once compared Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to a “sadistic nurse in a mental hospital” in a comment piece in the Daily Telegraph in 2007, and suggested earlier this year that outgoing President Barack Obama’s “ancestral dislike of the British empire” was a result of his Kenyan heritage.
Larry, the resident Downing Street cat, will remain in place, having cemented his position at No. 10 despite widespread doubts about his vermin-hunting abilities. Nonetheless, Downing Street said Wednesday that Larry’s tenure will continue.
The competition for the Labour Party leadership has become more intense with the emergence of a third candidate.
The Labour Party executive committee has ruled that his name must be on the ballot despite his lack of backing among legislators.
The victor will be announced in late September.
“In a different way, I have seen that same spirit of service in the awesome contributions of countless volunteers in communities up and down our country who are making our society bigger and stronger”, he said.
