Did Qandeel Baloch apprehend her death?
The popular Pakistani model became the latest victim of “honour killing” when her brother strangled her, police said on Saturday.
According to police, 30-year-old Waseem killed 26-year-old Qandeel in her rented house in Green Town area of Multan last night following an argument and managed to flee. Five ambulances were also parked nearby. “Apparently it was an incident of honour killing”, Sultan Azam, senior police officer in Multan, said.
Hundreds of women are murdered every year in Pakistan in so-called honour killing cases. However, following “no response” from the interior ministry on her application for getting personal security, social media starlet Qandeel Baloch was planning to settle down overseas after Eidul Fitr, citing security threats in the backdrop of her recent scandal with Mufti Abdul Qawi as the reason.
“Died fighting stereotypes, taboos… a fearless and gusty woman”, Twitter user Ayesha wrote.
Some are even arguing why should we even bother to trend Qandeel Baloch? You made us laugh, and you made us applaud…
Pakistani social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch was allegedly strangled by a brother in what appears to be an Islamic “honor killing”.
Baloch, whose real name was Fouzia Azeem, was a divisive figure in Pakistan, where her suggestive selfies subjected her to regular misogynistic abuse online.
As if the shock value around Qandeel Baloch’s death wasn’t enough, here comes another shocker.
“People are going insane – especially girls”.
“I get so many calls where they [girls] tell me I’m their inspiration and they want to be like me, she said”. She reportedly had spoken of leaving the country after Eid out of fear for her safety.
“While her approach to fame is not original, the woman herself is an interesting example of how a typically conservative society like Pakistan both vilifies sex and is obsessed with it….”
