Baloch was both adored and reviled.

Though popular with many liberals, Baloch often struggled with the frequent abuse aimed at her. In one Facebook post this month, she thanked her supporters for “understanding the message I try to convey through my bold posts and videos”.

Incidentally, her death comes just a few weeks after she believed her own life was in danger. Baloch received recognition from the media when in 2013, she appeared as an auditionee on “Pakistani Idol”, her audition went viral and she became an Internet celebrity. One commentator asked her if she would be “reporting from a brothel” next.

Advocates for a law to prevent honor killings took to social media after the news of Baloch’s death, speaking out against honor crimes and calling for reforms to existing legislation to ensure perpetrators are punished more consistently. “I get so many calls where they tell me I’m their inspiration and they want to be like me”, she told AFP after posting a provocative selfie on Valentine’s Day.

In a high-profile stunt, she promised to strip should Pakistan beat India in a recent cricket match — but as the BBC points out, Pakistan lost so we don’t know what would have happened.

She made more headlines after posting selfies on her Instagram account with Mufti Abdul Qavi, a senior member of the clergy. Since the incident, her brother has gone missing.

“Qandeel Baloch was 26”. In a video of the meeting, Qavi can be seen saying he would guide Baloch on spiritual and religious issues and that she has agreed to follow his instructions, according to Dawn.

“She wasn’t rich”, Tahir said. After the reports were published, she confirmed that her legal name was Fouzia Azeem and that she had been using an alias for safety reasons.

Baloch’s latest appearance was in a video by an unknown singer, in which she danced provocatively to a song titled “Ban”.

Behind the scenes, however, things were a bit different.

On the morning she was murdered, Qandeel had shared a picture of herself staring defiantly into the camera, wearing a pair of leopard print trousers and a black tank top. I need not to choose what type of women should be.
