Streaming services broke through at the Emmys in 2013 when Netflix garnered 14 nominations for its drama series “House of Cards“. The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC beginning at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Ansari is up against Anderson; Will Forte, “The Last Man On Earth”; William H. Macy, “Shameless”; Thomas Middleditch, “Silicon Valley”; and Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent“. A total of 21 acting noms went to non-white performers, including last year’s drama actress victor Viola Davis for ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder, Taraji P. Henson for FOX’s Empire, Keegan-Michael Key for Comedy Central’s Key & Peele, Andre Braugher for Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Tituss Burgess for Kimmy Schmidt, Niecy Nash for Getting On and Cuba Gooding, Jr.
The nominations were announced by Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham and Black-ish’s Anthony Anderson, who whooped and cheered as he read out his own nomination in the best comedy lead category, one of several the show received. FX’s critically-beloved The Americans finally broke through and, for its third season, bagged its first drama series, actor (Matthew Rhys) and actress (Keri Russell) noms.
Game of Thrones will compete in a seven-way race for best drama with Showtime’s Central Intelligence Agency thriller Homeland, FX’s Cold War espionage saga The Americans, AMC’s quirky legal story Better Call Saul, the final season of PBS’s period melodrama Downton Abbey, Netflix’s political mystery House of Cards, and USA Network’s new computer-hacking tale Mr. Robot. However, other TV series were lurking close behind, hoping to bring home some hardware come awards night.
Others included both Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright for “House of Cards”; Kyle Chandler for the drama “Bloodline”; Rami Malek for “Mr Robot”; Lily Tomlin for “Grace and Frankie” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” star Ellie Kemper.
“Black-ish” faces last year’s victor “Veep” and its star Julia Louis Dreyfus. Lena Headey, who plays Cersei Lannister, and Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, are former nominees to the same award and are again competing for the title.
Television’s most-watched network, CBS, was shut out of major awards with the exception of Allison Janney’s supporting actress nod for the comedy “Mom”.
Q: Does winning a major Emmy award guarantee eternal recognition? The entire crew was glad to see their names as nominated individuals for such a prestigious honor. The Funny or Die website was nominated twice in the short form category, matching two nominations past year, while YouTube won three nominations, including one for “Her Story”. “About damn time, I say”.

Nor do they care about the many arcane Emmy categories like “outstanding production design for a narrative period program”. It will be hosted by talk show veteran Jimmy Kimmel. This year the Emmys have been invaded by the British, BBC reports.
