And even Jerry Seinfeld’s online show on Crackle is up for “outstanding variety talk series”.
Another black actress, Viola Davis, won the category past year and is nominated in the same category for her work on ABC s “How to Get Away with Murder”.
Viola Davis, who also made history in 2015 by becoming the first black woman to win the best lead actress prize, has once again been nominated for her role in “How To Get Away With Murder”.
That’s not to say that the broadcast networks are obsolete or incapable developing strong, new shows.
Last year, only three of the 14 series noms were claimed by rookie shows. With its 56 nominations, FX surpassed its previous record of 45 nominations set back in 2014 and comes in as the second-most nominated network this Emmy Season.
The most star-studded category was perhaps lead actor in a limited series or TV movie which included six-time Emmy victor Bryan Cranston, who has received rave reviews for anchoring HBO s Lyndon B. Johnson biopic “All the Way”.
The awards will be handed out in Los Angeles on 18 September. Bring on the winners.
Better Call Saul, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Homeland, House of Cards, Mr. Robot, and The Americans are nominated for outstanding drama series. The Good Wife did not receive any recognition for its last season and the start was also not recognized. The HBO fantasy epic won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series past year, along with an army of other awards. Half of the nominees for lead actor in a limited series are black.
While “Game of Thrones” again tallied the most nominations (23), limited series “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” and “Fargo” received 22 nominations and 18 nominations respectively. They, along with Black-ish, a nominee for comedy series and its actor Anthony Anderson and actress Tracy Ellis Ross, were part of an historic wave of diversity that puts the Motion Picture Academy to shame.
Nominees for the outstanding comedy series are Black-ish, Master of None, Modern Family, Silicon Valley, Transparent, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Veep.
“I jumped up and down. more about that than about my own”, Paulson said.
Aziz Ansari’s beautifully observed Master Of None was always expected to take one of the two Outstanding Comedy Series positions vacated by Parks and Recreation and Louie.

Veep earned 17 nominations, including best comedy series and best lead actress in a comedy series, for its star Julia-Louis Dreyfus. The Funny or Die website was nominated twice in the short form category, matching two nominations past year, while YouTube won three nominations, including one for “Her Story”.
